Business is all about building relationships: employees with their customers, employers with their workers and so on. One of the most crucial decisions company owners can make for their businesses is who to hire. Nowadays, businesses have taken hiring to a new step by doing background checks on potential employees. This step has become indispensable to the hiring process because they ensure safety for the entire business including the customers. Background checks give you important facts about an applicant that you can’t get out of interviews and resumes. They show a person’s character and credibility.

Some industries such as the health sector are required by law to do background screening on its potential workers. Companies are legally responsible for any problems that may occur in the future due to negligent hiring.

An article in the Nursing Magazine in 1996 stated that injuries in the workplace happen mostly due to the hiring of incompetent workers or even of convicted felons. Most if not all of these incidents could have been prevented by a simple pre-employment background check. All of these companies have been sued for negligent hiring.
